Alternative Treatements - Peptic Ulcer

A peptic ulcer is a sore or inflammation on the lining of the stomach. Peptic ulcers are rather ubiquitous: It is estimated that 1 out of 10 People in the United States develops an ulcer at some time in his or her life. There are several causes of peptic ulcers. One cause is related to a bacterial infection, others can be caused by long-term use of common pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. As was once thought, peptic ulcers are not caused by stress or eating spicy food, although these types of influences can aggravate the condition.

The bacteria which is associated with causing peptic ulcers is known as Heliobacter Pylori. It is believed that H. pylori is the cause of the majority of peptic ulcers today. It is estimated that 20 percent of people under 40 years old and half of those over 60 years are infected. Although one can be infected with the bacteria, they may not develop an ulcer. It is not known why this is, but genetics and physical characteristics may play a role.

Scientists are not certain how H. Pylori is contracted, but theories abound such as through flies landing on food and people eating it, and through contaminated water. It has also been discovered in the saliva of humans and this may be a major way of contracting the bacteria.
(Kissing etc...)

It is said that H. Pylori can survive the harsh acidic conditions of the stomach due to it's secretion of a protective enzyme coupled with it's spiral shape which allows it to burrow into the lining of the stomach. This in turn, weakens the protective lining of the stomach causing the ulcer to form.

Symptoms of a peptic ulcer include and are not limited to:

-dull ache in the stomach of a transient nature

-stomach pain occurs after eating

-pain when the stomach is empty

-pain is relieved by eating

-antacids provide relief

If you suspect you have a peptic ulcer see a doctor as soon as possible to confirm this. The treatment is often related to antibiotic therapy, but you may wish to try a natural approach called mastic gum. Mastic Gum is a resinous substance obtained from trees which grow in Greece.

Mastic gum, or Mastica has been found to be an effective alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of gastritis, GERD and many types of inflammation. It is a safe and effective against H. Pylori, often the cause of ulcers. Contrary to antibiotics, it does not destroy the populations of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, which are so valuable to healthy digestion.

The recommended dosage is two capsules, twice daily, between meals. Cases of a more serious nature should be treated for a minimum of four weeks. Mastic Gum is well tolerated and has not been known to cause side effects. It can and has been used safely by individuals on other medications but always consult with your physician if you are unsure.

The side-effects associated with antibiotic therapy can be unpleasant. If you are not familiar with them, loose stool is the main culprit along with improper absorption of nutrients, dehydration and electrolyte loss. If you would like to avoid these symptoms, give Mastica a try.
