A member of the Ericaceae family. Grows on moorlands, heath and acid soil in Europe and North America and is cultivated extensively. A small undershrub 30-40 cm high. Erect and hairless with green stems. The alternate green leaves are oval, pointed and finely toothed. The flowers are globular and pinkish/white or green tinged, they droop from the leaf-axils, singly or in pairs and have 5 fused petals. Flowers in May, berries ripen in July, they are blueish black.
